Win a MUA MAKEUP ACADEMY Beauty Bundle
So we’ve all (male or female) probably had some sort of beauty or cosmetic catastrophe at some point or another. Whether it’s crazy tan lines, lashes falling into your romantic dinner, bad reactions to products or a simple broken nail – these things can bring trauma and humiliation to us all.
Its always comforting to know you are not alone, and hear about the trials of fellow beauty seekers, from which we can perhaps learn and avoid similar experiences.
Nail polish melting off my nails whilst on holiday was one of my weirdest beauty disasters (stick to reputable brands in hot weather), along with hair getting sucked into the back end of a hairdryer and ending up in knots, (watch what you’re doing when drying your hair) lol.
To be entered into the prize draw:
1. Comment below with your own beauty disasters.
2. Be sure to follow and re/tweet @thriftyshopper7 using the hashtag #mybeautydisaster
Closing date: 14 June 2015 Midnight. Winner will be drawn from UK entrants.

every time I try to apply a self tanning lotion it ends up in a disaster
thriftyshopper7
Hopefully trial and error will eventually pay off 😐
Laura Vitty
I once got carried away plucking my eyebrows and ended up with a very interesting look!
thriftyshopper7
Classic disaster!
Lin Daubney
Never go for dark spray tan! Took 3 exfoliating showers to get back to the glow
thriftyshopper7
Oh no, that can go terribly wrong!!😣
Claire Ward
Having my hair crimped not a good look on me back in the ninties
thriftyshopper7
Hmm, never been keen on crimping myself – I remember having a Babyliss crimper – my hair just looked very unnatural 😟
Eleanor Powell
Putting blue streaks in my hair – after a few weeks it looked like a seagull had pooped on me!
thriftyshopper7
Hair colour experiments are always doors leading straight to disaster lol😬
allpastmidnight
Bleaching my hair when I was a teenager — it was a mistake
thriftyshopper7
Always a classic disaster waiting to happen, well done for getting through the worst of it 😊
deniellenicol
Having to shave all my hair off due to a complete dying of hair disaster!. Oh I cried. Dxx
thriftyshopper7
Wow that’s extreme!!
deniellenicol
Oh yeah just a bit but it was the only way lol!. Dxx
Dale Dow
over plucking!
I try and have each eyebrow exact and in the past would have to keep plucking more from each side until I had ridiculously thin eyebrows
thriftyshopper7
That’s a disaster for sure!!
Melissa Manning
Waxed my own eyebrows at home. I’m sure I don’t have to tell you how that one turned out 😛
thriftyshopper7
Oh no!! 😬
Nikki Hunter-Pike
I decided to let a lady at Chelsea Brows in a shopping centre demonstrate their eyebrow pencil and stencils, I’d been desperate to get someone to do them properly as i ended in failure everytime at home (I have platinum blonde eyebrows and one eyebrow slightly higher than the other) – well i looked ridiculous, it looked like i had two great big dirty wonky catapillars on my face – and me being as polite as i am am, just smiled and then made a swift exit home to get it off my face! – i could actually see people sniggering at me as i walked through the shopping centre to get home!
thriftyshopper7
😬 Well done for making it home (without a hat to cover them) lol
Wendy
A friend who was training to be a beauty therapist (now fully qualified and is doing really well) had been waxing my eyebrows for about a year, she was on holiday and they needed doing so I bought some of the shaped wax strips to do them myself. Well the shape was ok but I was left with red spots of dried blood where every hair had been pulled from. I had to restyle my hair to cover my brows for a few days. #mybeautydisaster
thriftyshopper7
Ooooo sounds painful 😬
Amy B
I attempted to dye my hair bright red and instead it went bright orange – not a good look!
thriftyshopper7
Russian roulette vs hair dye = not much difference 😧
Kirsty Woods
Had my eyebrows waxed which was great until i got home and saw how wonky they were, not happy
thriftyshopper7
😥 Not good
alice lightning
I had put on mascara and forgot when I went out a fly flew into my eye so I started rubbing it, when I,d finished my eye looked as though it had a big bruise round it talk about looked like I got a punch in the eye , I walked home like it nowonder I was getting funny looks the embarrassment
thriftyshopper7
That’s just typical!! 😕
Mal Sparkle
Thinking I’d had so many years of practice that I could do my makeup without a mirror!
thriftyshopper7
I honestly don’t know how that could ever be a good idea, especially when using implements around your eyes 🙈
Delwen Johnson
Trying to put brown highlights into my blonde hair to try and look like Limahl back in the 80s!
thriftyshopper7
Yikes 😯
Angela Williams
I dyed my brown hair red, but my blond strips in my hair went pink.
thriftyshopper7
🙈 🙊 Oh dear!!
Julie Booth
My beauty disaster was doing my make up in the car (hubby driving) on way into work, and I forgot to put on my eyebrows and mascara so had a lovely foundation and lippy but no eyes all day- I never even realised!
thriftyshopper7
That’s a definite disaster – they eyebrow in particular gives the face it’s definition 😩
Irene Murdoch
80’s perm! that stayed with me far too long
thriftyshopper7
Ha ha, they were cool once 😊
Jill fairbank
My beauty disaster was forgetting I hadn’t put any make up on at all 1 pale face all day
thriftyshopper7
Ooooo how could you forgett!! Must have been one heck of a busy day that day lol 😮
Kathleen Thomson
Thinking black lipstick was a good idea trust me it’s not
thriftyshopper7
Whoa, I’ve never tried that one – bit scary lol 🙀
Charlotte Hood
Cutting all my hair off and dying the remainder black…. not a good look!
thriftyshopper7
Drastic hair move for sure!! 😯
Eve Burke
I have a beauty disaster daily!!!! I can never get my eye make up the same on each eye so always look very odd!!! The kids at the school I work at are always quick to point it out – IN EVERY LESSON!!! Gotta feel sorry for me!
thriftyshopper7
You poor thing Eve, we can all relate, but having the kids rubbing salt in the wound really doesn’t help!! Trial and error is how we eventually get it right i guess 😌
Zoe G
trying to dye my hair back to bleach blonde after it was black… that did not go well
thriftyshopper7
Extreme!! Best left to the professionals I think – your bravery is admirable lol 😨
Nichola Harwood
Fake eyelashes! Felt like i had butterflys for eyelashes and when they came out they ripped half of my natural one out too! Never again x
thriftyshopper7
Thanks for sharing – that’s awful, when done properly this shouldn’t happen, Eyelure glue is the most reputable, and you need only apply it sparingly. Hope you haven’t given up on false lashes – they’re great!!
DS
trying out a new eyeliner for a show and not realising it was dripping down my cheeks until in between sets.
also i had my eyebrows threaded and they made them so uneven even my husband couldn’t pretend! the sweet man tried to help even as I cried on the couch…..
thriftyshopper7
The eyeliner – that’s not funny. The eyebrows, really not funny – it’s like over plucking, sometimes they don’t grow back the same!! Thanks for sharing 😊
Heather Lynn
Oh dear lol. I’d have to say my biggest beauty uh-oh is when I was using one of those electronic brow shavers…
I was touching up my brows one night and the lighting sucked.
All of a sudden, I saw a bunch of little hairs fall in the sink! I turn off the shaver, and was confused bc my eye brows were still there!
So where did all those little hairs come from?!?
Well… My eyelashes.
Hahaha it was horrible. Luckily, I have normal eyelashes again. And now, I stick to the mini brow razors (that are not electronic!!) lol.
PS: I live in the US, so I’m not eligible for the contest. (I just wanted to let you know!)
I look forward to your future posts! (I just followed you through wordpress 😊)
<3 Heather Lynn
From Heathers Treasure
thriftyshopper7
OMG, you couldn’t make this up 😨 😩 😪 😫 😬 lol, that’s up there with the most unlikely disasters ever, thank goodness they grew back – I’d have been wearing false ones in the meantime. I’ve only ever used tweezers (and will continue to do so after reading this), yikes!! Thanks for sharing
Jessica Hutton
I once paid to have my makeup done professionally for a wedding I was a bridesmaid in. Let’s just say I ended up looking like a mix between a drag queen and a clown. With no time to fix it at the house I ended up taking wet wipes and makeup into the car on the way to the church. My face was bright red from all the scrubbing trying to get it off so I didn’t look my best in those wedding pictures.
thriftyshopper7
Oh no!!! 😭 It’s always a gamble letting someone do your make-up – especially if they’ve never done it before on you. Hope you managed to enjoy they day😊
Lisa Jones
I once went to a college training salon to have my eyebrows waxed, Halfway through the waxing the student ran out of the room – then came back in with her lecturer who told me she had ripped my eyebrow off !
I had to have a long fringe for a while !
thriftyshopper7
😦 Bravery Award goes to Lisa Jones for allowing a student to even come near her with wax lol.
Nina Brown
My mum in the 80’s when perms were all the rage did a home perm on my hair, but she put the end solution on first and then the perming solution. My poor hair 🙁 all I can remember is my Dad rushing to the shops and he got something to remedy it, but I never had my hair permed again
thriftyshopper7
OMG, that could have ended really badly, thankfully you still had a full head of hair, definitely a disaster!! 😬
BeautyBeyondTheScale
I’m in the US so I don’t qualify for the contest but I can add a story anyway!
I once applied sunless tanner day & night for about a week so that I was SUPER tan. I thought I looked so great until one day I wore ankle socks & running shoes outside for anout 8 hours, took them off & realized that the combination of my sweat & socks removed all the tanner from my ankles & feet. Ooos! Haha
thriftyshopper7
Oh no, yikes, and I guess we would never think a little sweat could do so much beauty damage lol, crikey, thanks for sharing 🙂
Kristyn Harris
Mascara that smudged my face
thriftyshopper7
Yes – giving us the ‘panda look’ lol
Aleksandra Odrowska (@AleksandraOdr)
wrong color foundation
thriftyshopper7
….especially when people don’t pay attention the the neck – neck and face end up being two different colours 🙂
kathy
picking foundation that was too orange lol
thriftyshopper7
Nobody is naturally orange, yet make up companies are always using orange as their main tint – why? Annoying.
Tiff Jordan
Put concealer on my spots… And got distracted, coming home later to find I had big beige dots on my face where I had forgotten to blend it in!
thriftyshopper7
Ohh that’s a disaster for sure! Blend, blend, blend lol
emmacoakes2014
Applying a gel facemask all over my face, it goes from a gel to a peel off mask. I smeared it all over my eyebrows not thinking and when i peeled it off it ripped off my entire eyebrows!! i was devastated.
thriftyshopper7
OMG, really, I didn’t realise they were that sticky-strong.
Michelle Stokes
Plucking my eyebrows too thin and taking just one more out – leaving a bald patch!
thriftyshopper7
Easily done, definitely a disaster – thank goodness for brow pencils.
Rosemary Sheehan
I always end up looking like a clown when I let my daughters do my make up, they think it helps to enhance my beauty
thriftyshopper7
Awww, I guess it’s the thought that counts!
Amy (@AmysTweets15)
Mine are always hair related!! Complete frizz bomb!!
thriftyshopper7
Nightmare, good conditioners /hair serum emergency lol
Rachael Medley
Most of my beauty disasters have involved fake tan. I’m naturally very pale so when I’ve used a dark brand it can gone streaky, orange and patchy. Urgh!
thriftyshopper7
Crikey, sounds like a nightmare, maybe a spray tan might be better.
Gemma Massey
My beauty disaster was when I was younger I used to buy darker foundation to my skin tone and plastered it on thinking I was cool lol I had no idea
thriftyshopper7
The things we do when we’re young lol
maxine207
Always have disasters with eye liner! Just can’t seem to find one that works for me!
thriftyshopper7
A liquid liner pen might help – they’re was to control and go on like a thin felt tip pen.
charlie hefferon
My beauty disaster – Rimmel “Heather Shimmer” lipstick in my teens with Blue mascara and purple HAIR mascara…. Glitter spray on top of all of this. Wow!
thriftyshopper7
Oooo sparkly!!
allison sullivan
ooo disasters well where do i start firstly one eye brow amazing the second is always shorter or i take a little too much off than i had realised.foundation mmm i find putting this on i forget and always get a orange streak on 1 side of my chin and side of face after losing concentration while sorting 2 children out
thriftyshopper7
Aww, who said multi-tasking was easy!
iona
Haha – where to start:) Usually I start off quite presentable, but when I get home look like a panda. The mystery is why I don’t realise this during night out – or does it just happen on the journey home?
thriftyshopper7
Ha ha, been there – I think it might be the products – some products stay on nicely, others don’t!! False lashes might be a better option than lots of mascara, and liquid eyeliner seems less likely to smudge.
Christine Szlobodnik
I was experimenting with my makeup & thought hmm i’l have black eyebrows & it DID NOT look good. I looked like a proper mega big drag queen :/
I had fake tan on my whole body but left out my face…
I have pale face so basically i did my makeup neat BUT mega bright pink blusher on my cheeks….
Lol!
Thanks to magazines & youtube i got my makeup sorted.
Thanks for this competition.
xx
thriftyshopper7
Thanks for sharing, yes black eyebrows can look very harsh, especially on fair skin tones, and disasters with fake tan seem to be a tradition everyone using it has to experience at least once lol!!
joanie1985
Mine are always hair related. Like 2 weeks ago when we didn’t realize the hair dye was actually a lightener as well and my hair looked yellow! Had to get a couple of brown ones to put through it!
thriftyshopper7
OMG, what a nightmare!!
Sarah Heath
I was abroad on company business and wanted to quickly put my make-up on between breakfast and checking out. As I was rushing to put my powder on I caught my cheekbones with a very heavy make-up brush and gave myself a massive black eye, quite tricky to explain to my colleagues.
thriftyshopper7
Hmm I walked into a door, or I hit myself with a make-up brush!!! You couldn’t make it up lol
Maz Thorburn
the time (and only time) I tried self-tan lotion – looked like I had been tangoed 🙁
thriftyshopper7
Yikes!!
Patricia Bond
I once used dark red lip liner (it looked brown to me!) on my eyebrows by mistake. I was in a rush didn’t have my glasses on and picked up the pencil and did my brows quickly it was only when I met my friend and she fell about laughing. I was mortified but it did spur me on to sort out my make up draw and put all the lip stuff together and all the brow stuff together etc.
thriftyshopper7
Love this!! Red eyebrows lol!! And yes, a great reason to get organised.
debra rutland-davies (@DebShaRut)
i dyed my hair and was pleased with the results then went to bed. when i awoke the next morning all my family were giving me shocked looks and gasps so i looked in the mirror and saw all my face was swollen my eyes my lips ect turns out i had an allergic reaction to the hair dye which i had been using for years
thriftyshopper7
That’s terrible, I’m glad you’re ok, I’ve read some absolutely awful stories about bad reactions to hair dye, sometimes fatal. Hope this never happens again – I bet most people don’t bother doing the patch test unless their prone to skin reactions. Thanks for sharing this x
louise morgan
Applying a self tan on the eve of attending a wedding ,it was very patchy so showered many times using a bath brush and had sore skin all day, lesson learnt.
thriftyshopper7
Oh no, the worst timing for this to happen – hope you still managed to enjoy the day, if possible, it might be safer to book in for a spray tan for special occasions in future, thanks for sharing x
Sarah
I dyed my hair myself. Put my hair up to go to zumba the next night. Didn’t realise until I looked in the mirror when i got home that i hadn’t wiped the dye off my skin – the top of both of my ears were black and i had a blob of dye on the back of my neck too!!
thriftyshopper7
That’s embarrassing – especially black – couldn’t be more obvious, yikes!!
Tina Cleveland
I dyed my hair a red colour but it went orange I had to get my sister to pick my daughter up from school whilst I went up the street to buy another dye and redyed it as it was bright orange. Thankfully that dulled the colour
thriftyshopper7
That’s a relief, thank goodness your sister was around, otherwise you’d have needed a hat lol
Katy Leat
I was straightening my hair on the morning of a distant relative’s funeral, dropped the straigheners on my bare foot and burned myself… ended up hobbling around for the rest of the day!
thriftyshopper7
Ooooo that sounds painful. I have this thing about always wearing sleeves and covering the legs when using straighteners in case the slip onto my shoulder arms/legs but never thought about my feet – socks from now on I think!! Thanks for sharing.
catherine devonport (@catdevonp)
I was tonging hair ready to go out when phone rang and I put hot tongs to cheek to answer it lololo ouch x
thriftyshopper7
OMG that’s awful, not even funny, the pain….you must have a scar!! That’s a very unfortunate beauty disaster, and hopefully your last.
Siane Kerr
My sister once told me I had bushy eyebrows so I shaved them all off! Disaster!
thriftyshopper7
Always seems like a good idea at the time lol, a bit like over-plucking – hopefully they grew back, if not you can get some really good brow tattoos from the well established beauty salons, but it’s very pricey.
Charlotte Porter
I can’t resist picking small black heads and spots and have to constantly walk around with red marks on my face. It’s got so extreme i sometimes tie my hands together and sit on them whilst watching tv. Just so i don’t subconsciously pick ! 😛
thriftyshopper7
Crikey, I think we all have a genetic tendency to pick/squeeze/peel etc…apparently fresh lemon juice or white toothpaste drys them out and reduces the swelling – you’re less likely to touch if it’s covered in toothpaste – worth a try next time! 😊
Ruth Harwood
I once went out without properly sorting my foundation and left a few blobs on my face xx
thriftyshopper7
Yikes!! Plus getting ready in artificial light doesn’t help us – it all looks so different in daylight lol
Helen Bennett
lipstick on teeth, no one told me and I had been grinning like a cheshire cat all morning
thriftyshopper7
Embarrassing!! …and people think we’re vain if we get the mirror out every 5 mins, but it’s because of things like this.
janet humphrey
Have cycled to work, only realising hours later my mascara had gone panda. Need a mirror to check i think (ha)
thriftyshopper7
The panda situation is a real nightmare – you leave the house looking fabulous and wonder what the heck happened by the time you get to work!!
Saturngeek
I’ve shaved off one of my eyebrows before by mistake, luckily it grew back in time for school! haha.
Pauline Rea
plucking eyebrows just before heading out lol
thriftyshopper7
…the last thing you need just before heading out!!
jayne hall
accidentally plucking out all my eyebrows them penciling on brown eye pencil
thriftyshopper7
Yes, cringe! Hard to grow them back the same after that.
GILL KNOWLES
I am just rubbish at putting make up on.
thriftyshopper7
Definitely a recipe for disaster lol, to be honest, most of us could probably benefit from learning how to apply make-up more effectively!
Fay Smith
Went to a friends wedding and i wore a lovely red lipstick, trouble is i didn’t realise it was all on my teeth until i went to the toilet and checked…. After the photos took place!
thriftyshopper7
Oooo, cringe!! Hopefully they photoshopped all the photographs and gave you dazzling whites lol.
Lyndsay Spencer
Waterproof mascara not being so waterproof and I ended up looking like a panda at a friends wedding and missed being in the photos while I scrubbed it off in the toilets
thriftyshopper7
That’s a really annoying one, why on earth do they say it’s waterproof when it isn’t?? I wonder if putting a coat of clear mascara over the top would stop this happening….
Tracy Hanson
Started by looking like with Coco the clown just before an important interview (had time to wash it off – but ended up looking like I had had a bad spray tan instead. Very lucky I got the job. 😀
thriftyshopper7
Nightmare, as if the pressure of an interview wasn’t enough to deal with!!! Well done on getting the job, thankfully they were not a vain, looks-obsessed superficial ‘your-make-up-must-be-perfect’ interview panel lol.
Alexis Pettie
My disaster was when I dyed my hair, i went to the pub. Everyone commented on my new colour, until we were moving on to another bar, it was raining and the dye ran all down my face
thriftyshopper7
Oh no!! That’s not even funny – dodgy dye brand maybe.
Stephen Farnaby
I’m a constant disaster!
thriftyshopper7
Oh dear lol, I’m sure things can only improve!!
