Texas Floods, Trump Tantrums and Terrorist Attacks

Just a few more random thoughts…..

Disasters, controversies and tensions seem to be spiralling out of control across the mainstream media, more and more these days – I can’t keep up with it all.

One thing after another, all over the globe. Is it just me or do problems seem to be picking up speed in the mainstream news, and scarily so?

Fires, floods, mud slides, missiles, terrorism, poverty, financial struggles, political unrest, sensationalised celebrity deaths and a thread of high profile accusations of child abuse.

Programmes like ‘Can’t Pay We’ll Take It Away’ seemingly the norm.

The stark misfortunes of others, becoming the evening TV entertainment for some.

Others dive into ‘Real Housewives’ and other so called reality TV, a very plastic reality I’d say.  A reality that makes you forget the ‘real’ reality.

What is happening to our world? There’s no shortage of negative stories to tell.

When you stop to look at it long enough, this picture usually generates a longing to escape, to take refuge somewhere tucked away from social media, fast cars and traffic jams; where a daily dose a beautiful view, ocean waves and a step closer to nature replaces the daily dose of mainstream news, pollution and unnecessary stresses of modern living.

If only we could claim refugee status on the grounds of escaping the general madness of the world – where would you head off to?

Programmes like ‘Escape to the Country’, and ‘A place in the Sun’ start to tap into something dormant inside us.

It’s easy to get wrapped up in the busyness of modern day life and rarely step back to look at how absurd some of it is, how unhealthy and unfulfilled it can leave us, and how we stress and toil in vain to try and keep up with it all – and for what?

Is it all worth it?

Maybe for some.

For others, perhaps a better life balance is in order.

Each time I hear or read the news I am more conscious of the blessings I have, and feel truly grateful for all the small things I take for granted. People have lost their homes to floods and fires in minutes, lost families. Even this blog post is a privilege – some have no energy to post a rant like this, their health is weak, or their situations do not allow space or time to vent about their problems.

The harsher society seems to get, the more I am reminded of how important it is to be kind. Do something nice for someone, no matter how insignificant you think it is – that small thing could make a huge difference to another person. Kindness is contagious, and is perhaps an understated remedy for many ills.

It is also important to remind ourselves of the power we have over our own well being and happiness, even if the wider world stays the same!

Whatever you want in life can usually be achieved (within reason), if you’re willing to seize options, grab opportunities, make plans, do your research, invest time, invest money, take inspiration from those who have already achieved your goals, make the necessary sacrifices and keep working toward those goals, work on yourself, change your attitudes and thinking – make different choices, begin to change your life, improve yourself and create a happier existence.

Stop following the crowd.

What’s that saying – “if you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got”.
