It’s a scorching hot day, and a short boat ride from mainland Barbuda takes us out to the Frigate Bird Sanctuary, the second largest of its kind in the world, a protected area known as Codrington Lagoon National Park where frigate birds come to mate, nest and raise their young.
The mating season runs from September to April.
In Frigate bird culture – it’s the female that chooses a male, she flies around looking down at the red chested males who try their best to win the heart of a white chested female by puffing out their red chests.
Males sit and wait eagerly in their nests, hoping a female will land on them and start the mating ritual.
A trip to the Frigate bird sanctuary was such a privilege, to get up close and observe them in their natural surroundings.
