Quick Brew? Auctioning my Sunglasses and other things!

Let’s have another quick brew.

Make mine a berry tea with a juiced lime this time!

I know it only seems like 5 mins ago since we were talking about dogs and Greggs over our last cuppa, but you can never drink too much tea can you!!

Ok, so what now….

Spotted

These coasters. Certainly a bit different. 🤔

Loo awards…that’s a new one!! Is there an awards ceremony like the Baftas/Oscars?? Spotted in Kings Cross train station! Congratulations to Kings Cross 🏆

Bagged

Maybe not to everyone’s taste I know. But I love it!!! Not sure what I’m going to do with it yet…so many potential uses!!! It’s ornamental value alone screamed ‘SOLD’ at a pop up Sunday market. It’s very heavy cast iron and could also look lovely spray painted. Priced at £30 bagged it for £20.

Can we buy your sunglasses?

I was looking at bits in H&M Home – since they have some dedicated shops nowadays. Anyway I noticed a couple looking at me as they stood looking at some kitchen things. The woman asked where I got my sunglasses – she really liked them and asked how much they cost. I told her.

Woman: “Can I pay you £10 more ‘on top’ for them”

I explained I didn’t want to sell them. I can’t be the only one who knows it’s not easy finding sunglasses that you really really like so I’m keeping them. They’re priceless now.

Man: How about we give you an extra £15 for them.

Me (thinking): Wow!!!! It’s a bidding war. Ebay personified.

Could this be the shape of things to come? If you like someone’s jacket just go up to them in public and make an offer there and then, with your phone ready to send a Paypal payment, or cash in hand. People do it with houses – so maybe it could catch on!

Anyway, the answer was still a very polite no.

Getting Rid

I never want to wear them, doubt I’ll ever wear them again and don’t even like them that much really. Then I think, oh but what if one day it’s just what I need! Enough of this – if they’re ‘on reserve’ they’re going on the ‘get rid’ pile. I’ve never thrown anything out and then missed it, so I’ll keep going. Too many clothes taking up space and never being worn is like a weird kind of clothes OCD. Time to clear some space and pass things onto someone who really wants them.

The spare room full of ‘yet to be sorted out’  just keeps on giving!

Blogging Patterns

I’m not one of those bloggers who feels compelled to post routinely. I used to aim for a minimum of one post per week, which is still my rough average. Sometimes less is more, and sometimes I’m just busy. Other times, I might be on a roll, or in the vein of blogger Tim Hall – sometimes I might blog simply because I feel like it, that’s it.

Blogging isn’t a full time job for me, it’s just a leisurely hobby so there’s no pressure.

Anway, I hope you enjoyed this quick brew, tea’s getting a bit cold and I need to nip out so until the next one…..take care and enjoy the rest of the weekend. 🤗🔆

  1. kagould17 – Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

Interesting post Cherryl. Ireland has their Top Toilet Award and I seem to recall that New Zealand had a Tidy Toilet campaign. Apparently good restrooms are key to happy tourists. I think we can all agree on that. Have a great afternoon. Allan

One needs to be careful about selling attire to strangers on the street; today it’s accessories, tomorrow it’s lingerie.

I was born in Earls Court, centre of Polish émigré life at the time, then lived in South Kensington and went to a tiny boarding school in Ealing. I read Spanish and English at Sheffield University, and as I always knew I wanted to be a teacher I did my PGCE there in 1978. For the next forty years I taught in a wide variety of schools, eventually specialising in Special Education. The cohesive theme of my career was creative education in the widest sense of the word. My passions are people, education, literature, theatre and inclusivity. I hate sport but enjoy walking and taking photographs and writing. Now on my gap year I am enjoying volunteering my help with the Polish Cultural Foundation, chairing the committee of Antokol Polish Care Home and I promote knowledge of immediate history to school children about the events of the Second World War which led to my parents being here as refugees.

Loved this. I’d have sold the glasses – but I’ve never actually owrn sunglasses so I dont know. Id paint the cake stand a shocking pink and use it to store all my brooches and earrings.
Blogging. i have enough matrial for everyday – but I dont often feel like it. so sometimes two a day and sometimes one a month. I write to amuse myself and occasionally some friends. no pressure at all- I don’t understand why there should be, but I notice that a lot of people put themselves under this sort of pressure.

…managed to hit ‘send’ before I’d finished typing 🙄
Anyway, sounds like you have a balanced approach to blogging, as long as it doesn’t become a stressful ordeal, no harm in just going with the flow.

My Mum is moving to the US and just offered me a pretty Shelley cup & saucer – so I’ll soon be drinking my tea out of that and feeling oh so fancy 😀 I have a pretty one myself, but it has a scalloped edge so is not that comfortable to drink from, so I’m really rather chuffed.

How weird to have people trying to buy the sunglasses off your face. Are they fancy ones?

Some pretty cups and saucers work well as accessories, especially if they’re a bit fiddly or uncomfortable to drink. I think the person wanting my sunglasses just liked the style of them, maybe she’d been looking for just the thing – not sure I’d say they’re fancy though. Bizarre experience lol 😎

      1. catterygirl – London – I am 73 years old and have done many things in my life, such as being employed in The City of London for several years, starting as a shorthand-typist and working my way up to Assistant Company Secretary. I have lived abroad for certain periods in my life as my father was a petrochemical engineer. I lived in Trinidad at the age of 11 and we moved to Kuwait when I was 14. When the contract in Kuwait finished, we drove home to England by car, which was an adventure in itself, worthy of another book. I am a true Brit, married to an Arab, with a 29 year old son and we had a holiday villa in Spain for many years. In 2002, we moved to the villa and when our savings ran out, we designed a boarding cattery from scratch and I am now writing a book about the experience. Whilst running the cattery, I was approached by the Euroweekly News to write articles about cats. I wrote many articles about cat behaviour, grooming, general cat care and then progressed to write the A-Z of cat breeds. In earlier years, I attended creative writing classes and have written many short stories and am working on a novel set on panother planet. This book “Planet Zu Tu” is about what happens to us when we die. I love to read and am buying lots of books as mine are in storage and I feel lost, without lots of books around the home. I am currently reading lots of Mills and Boon as I might write a romance one day. I have started one already about a young woman who breaks her leg and falls in love with her surgeon.

Once many years ago an American lady asked to buy my engagement ring when we sat opposite each other on a train! It was a Diagem (artificial diamond). Only paid £100 for it. Hubby couldn’t afford to buy me a rock at the time. She obviously thought it was real. I didn’t sell it.

Such a fun read. I particularly loved the story of the people trying to buy your sunglasses. That’s hilarious! 🤣

  7. Ellie Carpenter – United Kingdom – Writing my memoirs, musings, a little fiction and a lot of poetry as a way of exploring and making the most of my life ... ... Having had a break from writing my blog for more than three years, I decided to return to write my memoirs, some day-to-day observations, views and feelings. My passion is non-fiction poetry. I have a disability and use an electric powerchair called Alfie and let nothing get in the way of living life to the full. I believe that you can never do a kindness too soon and should give credit where credit is due. A smile or a kind word could make the difference between a good or bad day for a person - we never know what's going on for another soul. Those little things, perhaps, practised daily like a mantra, could mean so much to someone else. Thank you for visiting my blog and reading a little more about me. Please, make yourself at home here. You are very welcome. Ellie x 😊

How funny about wanting to buy your sunglasses from you. I think I might have been tempted to take the money (I sound like that old game show, ‘Take your pick’, where they asked, “Take the money or open the box!” I thought it was Hughie Green, but I just googled it and found it was someone called Michael Miles (I’d never have remembered that name). There’s a bit of useless information for you 🤪. I’ve never found a pair of sunglasses that I really liked. My optician has put UV filters in my daily glasses, which should protect my eyes a bit, especially the growing cataracts! That makes me feel old when I’m not!

I love the coasters. I’d have a job to pick one as they’re all funny in their own way. I love the cake display stand even more. I think that’s what it is, isn’t it? You get them in quaint tea shops with dainty finger sandwiches and posh cakes on them. It’ll look amazing when it’s spray-painted. What colour would you do?

I agree with your ‘Getting Rid’ paragraph. I had to clear out stacks of stuff from what was the junk room to make into a spare bedroom for my son and grandchildren when they come and stay. I had to be really ruthless. I need to take a leaf out of your book and make a start on my clothes. I’ve got far too many tee shirts, and I never wear them all anyway. I’m odd like that; I never wear my favourite tops, trousers, jumpers etc. as I’m keeping them for a special occasion, except that the special occasion hasn’t arisen yet! You can bet your life if I get rid of them; an event will materialise out of nowhere! Just my luck.

Blogging is another matter. As you know, I put myself under too much pressure to read, comment and often write. I really should learn to chill and not get myself all worked up about it. One day … Xx 🦢💖😘

Lol, yes all that was needed was an audience shouting ‘take the money’😅
Not sure what colour I’d spray the stand – would depend on where I put it and what I’d be using it for. At the moment I think I’ll just leave it alone, the rustic look is working for me. ✨
Being ruthless with clothes is a must, but keep some of those occasion items if you think you’d wear them. It’s much harder to find that sort of thing last minute and stressful if you can’t find anything you like in the shops. I usually find things I like when I’m not really looking/don’t really need them – but if there’s an event to go to next week, I probably won’t find anything I like in the shops – sod’s law.🙃
      Have a good week x😊

I just this morning noticed how many of my summer tops I did NOT wear this year. It hasn’t been really what I call ‘hot’ here in Nova Scotia. We have had a few warmer-than-usual days, but I opted for some cool sundresses then. I am not a clothes collector, but definitely have a decent variety of sleeveless tops for the warm weather. I was just wondering if I had too many. But I will soon be tucking them away until next year, as I can feel the season already beginning to change. It felt very ‘autumn-like’ yesterday on my walk. Beautiful, sunny, and crisp. The good part of the year is coming. YAY!

Re: blogging . . . I try for one a week. Sometimes it works, sometimes it is just a lot of talk about nothing. I don’t know if filling in on the weeks that I am working on things is good or not. It seems when I am busiest, there is less time to write. I guess for me it is trial and error. I always enjoy reading your posts and observations.

Hang on to those glasses. 😀

Lol, that’s the lid for the cup – these cups came with a built-in sieve and a lid…from Tiger stores if I remember rightly (so many cute little bits in there)…but it does look like a quirky coaster in the pic, maybe because it’s a close up pic 😊
