Out and About: York City Centre

Just a bit of a wander around York city centre, from earlier in the summer across one rainy day and one sunny day, typical!!

Way back, I went on a primary school trip to York, visiting the JORVIK Viking Centre and York Castle. I loved York then and still love it now – it offers a lovely dose of quirky shops, historic buildings and cobbled streets. What’s not to like!

The castle wasn’t as modern as it is now, (sorry I didn’t take any pics). As a young child I remember thinking it looked like a giant pudding!!! (I know 🙄 😆).

Anyway, let’s go for a bit of a wander….

Interesting and quirky shops…..

The Shambles

York is a UK tourist city, (one of the most popular places to visit in the UK), it is geared toward tourists. One of its many tick box must see spots is a cosy little collection of medieval buildings/shops in tightly packed narrow cobbled street called The Shambles.

Be warned, if you want a clear photo, you need to get down there really early otherwise you will never get a clear shot, this place is usually heaving with selfie-happy tourists.

Something about these scenes makes me think of the scenes described by Neil Hanson in his book recounting ‘the great fire of London’

I think the Christmas shop is open all year round.

The last picture above of the beautiful old fashioned manual till – I saw this through a shop window then noticed there’s a flat screen device stuck to it so it’s probably not used in the old fashioned way anymore.

The Shambles also has an outdoor market

York Minster

York’s mighty cathedral, the York Minster can be seen from various points around the city, and a useful landmark for getting your bearings.

York City Walls

Amongst other things, York city centre is characterised by its city walls, which you can walk along and take in the views (heads up – this does include a lot of steps). I’d like to do the whole perimeter one of these days, a nice sunny day….we shall see.

Brings back memories of my backpacking holiday in 1989! Yorkshire has so much going for it even if my husband is from Lancashire.

  2. Anne Sandler – In retirement, Anne is pursuing digital photography--her new hobby. She found, when taking photos to accompany her feature articles, that photography was fun. Of course, those were in the film days! Now she's accepted the challenge of learning shooting the digital way. This blog is called Slow Shutter Speed because that's how she feels her photographic journey is proceeding.

Wow, what a great little treasure and photographed so well. Thanks for the tour and for visiting and following my blog.

  3. jillslawit – My corner of Pennine Yorkshire may be no more than a crumb crumbled from the piecrust holding this fragile world together, but it's where I come from. I am part of the earth and moorland of my surroundings, which are deep-rooted in what I think, what I write about and what I am. I live in a small cottage amongst my pens and pencils, my photos, vintage bits and bobs, and my books. Best of all I get to share my life with small visiting granddaughters, family and some very special friends. I work full time in the charity sector. I enjoy reading, writing, taking pictures and looking after my little garden when I've time.

Absolutely love York. Haven’t been since before lockdown but was a regular visitor. Have stayed at the haunted Golden Fleece and been in loads of them shops. Can’t wait to go back.

Oh! How I LOVED this post! So many lovely pictures! I don’t know if you were aware, but I am in the process of designing a holiday village for my painting followers. I create a couple of ‘storefronts’ per year and they are very popular. My next up is a bookstore. I love using real stores as inspiration, taking elements from this one and that one and putting them together in a fun way. Seeing the lovely shops here is so exciting. I especially love the “cat store” as I love cats. 🙂 Thank you, as always for bringing us along with your travels. I so love your posts! Take care. 🙂

Thank you Sheila 💐 I’m really pleased you enjoyed this one, please take whatever inspiration you can from these posts – that’s what it’s all about, a little bit of York in your holiday village would be great 🤗
Best wishes, and have a lovely weekend✨

Wonderful snapshots of York, Cherryl. I have only vague memories of brief day trip there, many many moons ago. This really fuels my wanderlust for some proper exploring the next time I’m back in the country.

York is on the “to visit” list and these pictures have shoved it way up to the top! Now I just need to organise for Himself to take a batch of leave next year.

That old style till is stunning. We saw a couple earlier this year at a motorcycle museum where the staff admitted they wished they still functioned as they were trying to handle visitors during a power cut!

What a great set of photos and commentary. We spent a very happy day in York at the end of our last long distance walk.

  11. Steve Beckham – Long Beach, CA – I’m Pastor Steve Beckham, a recently retired pastor with roots in the midwest and south, though I’ve lived in Southern California most of my life. Before I became an ELCA Lutheran pastor, I worked in advertising for 20 years, and I still do some voiceover work. I also write. The upshot of all that is that I tend to see the world and the church–especially the church–a little differently than many others who wear that funny collar. Don’t get me started about the collar. It has a leash attached, you know. Anyway, I hope you find food for thought in whatever recordings and musings you find posted here. If something I say offends you, I hope you take time to ask yourself just what button it pushed and why that particular button is attached to a hot spot in your psyche. The greatest commandment, said Jesus, is to love God with all your heart, soul, mind and strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself (Mark 12:30). I think that sometimes people of faith do the “heart and soul” part pretty well but tend to overlook the “mind” part. St. Paul advised us not to be conformed, but to be transformed… by the renewing of our minds. That, in a nutshell, is what I try to do, myself, and I hope that in the process I help some others not only see the presence of Christ alive in the world, but help them become possessed by the very breath of God. It’s quite an aspiration,* I grant you, but that’s the fire in my bones. *For fans of Latin roots, this is a small pun.

Well that was just lovely! Thank you for taking us all on a little vacation this morning! And you saved me a ton on airfare!

  12. kagould17 – Not much to tell. After working for 3 companies over 43+ years (38 years 7 months with my last company), I finally got that promotion I had waited my entire career for……retirement. I have been exploring this new career for the past 7+ years and while it is not always exciting, the chance to do what I want for myself and my family instead of what my company wants has been very fulfilling. Early on, there was a long list of projects in my “to-do” hopper and I attacked these projects with a vengeance for the first 9 months of retirement. Eventually, my brain told me that this was not what retirement was about, so it took me another 5 months before my industriousness again took over and I attacked another line of projects, this time somewhat shorter and less complicated, as well as many new projects related to the family weddings in 2016. After going hard for 6 weeks and 3 weddings, my body was telling me to relax, then the flu bug hit and as soon as that was done with me, my sciatic acted up. No rest for the wicked. In 2020 and 2021, the Covid 19 pandemic changed the whole retirement gig. I was lucky to not be still working, for sure. I enjoy photography, gardening, working with my hands, walking, cycling, skiing, travelling, reading and creating special photo and video productions obtained in my first pastime. I may never become wealthy in any of these pursuits, but I already feel I am rich in life experiences far beyond any expectation.

We loved our 2008 stay in York. A lot to see and a lot of history. Happy Sunday Cheryl. Allan

  13. Basia Korzeniowska – United Kingdom – British born of Polish parents; educator, teacher, translator, chair of Polish Citizens’ Committee Housing Association Ltd., fundraiser and organiser. I was born in Earls Court, centre of Polish émigré life at the time, then lived in South Kensington and went to a tiny boarding school in Ealing. I read Spanish and English at Sheffield University, and as I always knew I wanted to be a teacher I did my PGCE there in 1978. For the next forty years I taught in a wide variety of schools, eventually specialising in Special Education. The cohesive theme of my career was creative education in the widest sense of the word. My passions are people, education, literature, theatre and inclusivity. I hate sport but enjoy walking and taking photographs and writing. Now on my gap year I am enjoying volunteering my help with the Polish Cultural Foundation, chairing the committee of Antokol Polish Care Home and I promote knowledge of immediate history to school children about the events of the Second World War which led to my parents being here as refugees.
