Mosta Rotunda Church, Malta: and the Miracle Bomb!!

Mosta is a town in the north of Malta, best known for its beautiful 18th century Mosta Rotunda church, aka Mosta Dome.

Unless you have zero interest in Malta’s history and culture, you’ll be hard pressed to visit Malta and not hear about this iconic church.

The bomb

Mosta Ratunda’s most famous event took place during World War 2.

Malta was bombed severely during the war, it took a good thrashing for such a small nation.

A hefty 500kg German bomb shell crashed through the church dome before bouncing across the church floor three times, as a 300 strong congregation sat with bated breath during mass.

It really is a miracle that it didn’t land on anyone’s head.

Miraculously, the bomb didn’t go off, and the event is heralded as a miracle from God to this day.

Churches to Malta is like ice to the arctic, they don’t do churches by halves, each church if grand, majestic and architecturally awe inspiring.

How to get there

Getting around Malta is generally very easy since it’s so small.

Regular buses:

203 from Sliema

202 from St Julian’s

41 42 45 or 48 from Valletta

186 from Bugibba

44 from Mellieha

Hop on Hop Off Bus: includes a Mosta stop on the northern route

Organised Day Tours: most will include a stop at Mosta with entry tickets included. Night time tours include a quick photo stop, but you won’t be able to go inside.

Cost: Tickets to get into the church will set you back 2 Euros 💶

      Thanks Charlie, yes it’s a great story – you couldn’t make it up lol, and it’s a beautiful church. It’s become a good time to look back on all our past travels… at the moment, and soak them up again. I had both extremes weather-wise – scorching hot and stormy blustery days with flooding…. typical for December perhaps 🤪

      I was there for a couple of weeks and loved it, thanks for asking – its such a quaint place with heaps of history and character – and the Maltese really go all out for the Christmas season – the lights and decorations were brilliant so December was a great time to go. I’ll be posting a lot more about Malta shortly…. it would be great to hear your thoughts too 🔆
