Beside the Seaside: Eastbourne

Eastbourne is said to be the sunniest place in the UK, with the longest duration of daylight hours. During this trip it was a scorching hot day 🔥 with absolutely no shortage of sunshine.

Eastbourne sits on the southern coast of the UK, not too far from it’s noisier neighbour, Brighton – both are popular seaside towns.

Maybe the bins would look nicer in pastel colours too!

A trip to the seaside is always a pleasure and definitely a long standing summertime tradition, along with candyfloss, seaside rock and fish and chips. Personally, I pass on the rock and the candy floss – too sweet. 🍭

There is something soothing and mysterious about being by the sea, I’ll never tire of it.

Eastbourne Pier

Lunch from the chippy on Eastbourne Pier £9+ for this medium portion!

Interesting

Spotted in a sweet shop – I’d like to know what I might win first.

Interesting fact: “In the UK, the furthest you can get from the sea is a farm in Derbyshire” 🤔

“There’s no such thing as a seagull”  – apparently that’s a made up name. Their real names are herring gulls. 🤔

Quirky Shops

There are a few independent shops dotted around in the main town, including this very well stocked book shop.

Just look at that 😜

As usual with me – I like a nice ‘tin’ which is why I bought the tea…

I love a sea view – so I couldn’t resist these beautiful placemats…I might have one on a shelf or add a hook on the back and display it as a picture.

And of course, the customary fridge magnet.

Doctor’s Orders

“The closer you are to the sea, the better you feel. In fact, doctors have been prescribing curative trips to the shore from as early as the 18th century, and recent studies suggest the link between the ocean and health is a scientific fact.”

There are plenty of health benefits to gain from being by the sea and in the sun.

How beautiful! I really enjoy seeing your posts. Thank you for taking the time to share with us. I came from Chicago and now live in beautiful Nova Scotia. I have been here 18 years now and never tire of just watching the ocean or being by the beach – any beach. Our water here is bitter cold most of the time, and we do little more than wading, but even walking along the shore is something that is calming and grounding.

The shops look fun. Like you, I am a sucker for a pretty box or tin. They are pretty and useful and (to me) sometimes better than what is inside. 🙂 Silly me!

Have a wonderful week, Cherryl. I hope it cools down for you soon.

Thanks Sheila – but no, nothing silly about the tin thing, I agree completely. The tin is often much better than the contents….the contents are like an extra bonus, especially when it’s a tin of biscuits 😊

  3. maristravels – Isle of Wight – There are still some countries I haven't seen and some things I haven't done and won't do now (like trekking in Nepal) but I've covered a fair bit of the globe as a traveller. I've been a professional travel writer, blogger, and photographer for some years now, love cinema, theatre, books and art. I try to cover these subjects in blogs when they crop up in my travels. I live in the UK and these days I travel mainly in Europe and Asia.

I’m a big fan of Eastbourne. I love it’s cleanliness and overall tidiness, although I also love Brighton, its noisier neighbour. My last visit there was for the tennis in the year before Covid hit so I’m due for another trip, but my next ‘seaside’ visit is Southend in 3 weeks time. Love your images.

Loved this atmospheric piece. Great pics and the English seaside certainly has a particular charm. As an Aussie I didn’t expect to enjoy them so much, but it’s more about the towns and surrounds than the actual sand and water. I wrote a blog about my visit to the ‘beach’ called Postcards from the seaside at http://www.travelgaltravels.com

A lovely post – I love your beautiful photos. It’s a wee while since I have been to Eastbourne. I remember is as a little more staid than Brighton, but lovley nonetheless!
My adopted home town in Bournemouth and I never tire of those sea views. Plus I’m a windsurfer, so a great believer in getting enough Vitamin Sea!

Ah, that brings back memories, when we lived in London we used to pop down to Eastbourne on hot days for a sea breeze! Now, in Birmingham, the sea is so far away – our nearest is Weston-super-Mare, where the tide is famously almost always out, somehow! We are lucky enough to have family in Bournemouth though so go down there fairly regularly – a lovely part of the world, too.

I loved this post Eastbourne looks beautiful!
I did a post on my Instagram not so long ago about the benefits of visiting the beach on some studies I had found…….I believe places like the beach a most definitely beneficial to helping us feeling better. Great post 👍🏾

Having had a break from writing my blog for more than three years, I decided to return to write my memoirs, some day-to-day observations, views and feelings. My passion is non-fiction poetry. I have a disability and use an electric powerchair called Alfie and let nothing get in the way of living life to the full. I believe that you can never do a kindness too soon and should give credit where credit is due. A smile or a kind word could make the difference between a good or bad day for a person - we never know what's going on for another soul. You are very welcome. Ellie x 😊

Absolutely love this post and the glorious photos. Were they taken recently? You’re such a good photographer, Cherryl. I’ve never been to Eastbourne, although, funnily enough, my friends have just come back from there and had a lovely time. The sky is so blue, and the sand looks so clean. I love all the independent shops. I could spend hours mooching around the bookshops – my idea of paradise. Also, I didn’t know that about seagulls. That’s interesting. One of my readers challenged me to write a post about seagulls – I’m completely stumped! Needless to say, the post didn’t materialise 🙄! The nearest I’ve been to the sea is when I went to Southend-on-Sea, as you probably remember as I wrote a couple of posts about my trip. As you say, I felt miles better down the coast. I’d love to go again, but I will wait for it to be a little cooler. This heat is too much for me – how do you find it? Fish is expensive these days, not that I buy it being vegan. I suppose £9 is quite a lot for fish and chips – cheaper at Tesco’s 😜! How are you doing, Cherryl? You don’t seem to have posted for quite a while, so I hope you’re okay. Xx 🌞❣😘

Hi Ellie -I hope you’re well
Yes very recent August pics and scorching hot weather – the shops are a great escape from the heat, cooler weather would be better for walking and exploring further out along the strip but in the heat it soon gets tiring 🤪
I think the majority vote would be – stick with ‘seagulls’ it makes more sense 👍
I’ve had much nicer fish n chips for less tbh, but you’re right, prices have gone up and a lot of chip shops across the UK are closing down from what I’m hearing.
Aww, I’m fine thanks for asking 🤗 💛 I’m a lot more easygoing with my blog and reading blogs these days, I dip in and out otherwise it can feel like a chore. (I keep my favourite bloggers in a WP list so I can always find them easily to see what I’ve missed later – you’re in that list). 😉
Keep cool and enjoy the rest of the weekend Ellie 🙏x
